What?! I’m confused. Mustaches? For Kids?
Yes. Mustaches for Kids. Admittedly, this is a interesting concept. Below, you will find a collection of information regarding some common curiosities.
Q. Is this a joke?
A. No. Since its inception in 1999, hundreds of Growers across the US & Canada have joined the Mustaches for Kids community, and raised more than $150,000 for children’s charities.
Q. I’m a woman. Can I join?
A. Yep. Mustaches for Kids does not discriminate with regard to gender, age, nationality, Mustache-aptitude, or any imaginable criteria. Anyone can raise money. Just remember, not only is the Mustache more than a heart on the face, the Mustache is also more in the heart than on the face.
Q. How do I become a Grower?
A. To grow with us you simply have to commit to shaving on Nov. 13 and growing a mustache through Dec. 13. You are of course encouraged to use this potentially humiliating month to raise money for Chicago area students. There are many ways to get started as an official cash-&-stache-making Grower. 1) Register or email us at m4kchicago {at} gmail {dot} com to get on our mailing list, you’ll receive instructions on setting up your Grower page on DonorsChoose.org and get updates on our local events; 2) So long as you start with a Clean Shave on Nov. 13, you’re welcome to show up at any of our events and announce that you’re growing; 3) Don’t have much time for emails and social ’staching? Simply set up a Grower page on DonorsChoose.org and start raising money. Email us m4kchicago {at} gmail {dot} com for instructions or follow this guide.
Q. Although I am currently on the internet, I’m deathly afraid of websites that require logging in and such. Can I still participate without signing up on DonorsChoose.org?
A. Yes. If you’d like the celebritydom that comes with having your very own Grower page but simply can’t figure out how to make one, email m4kchicago {at] gmail {dot} com and ask for Web Mistress Gwendolyn’s help. She can help you get a page created, upload a photo to it if you’d like to share, and even pick projects you can raise money for. Even if you don’t want to have your own Grower page, you can help us raise money for the Chicago - General Donations projects. We’ve selected a number of projects to fundraise for through general donations and through our event proceeds. Any Growers who don’t want to set their own projects and fundraising goal can help us get donations for those general projects! Join the mailing list or come out to an event for more information on how you can help.
Q. I want to do it, but I’m scared.
A. Technically, that is not a question. (But we will respond nonetheless.) We firmly believe you should step up to the plate. Overcome those fears and grow that Mustache…for a good cause. Remember, there’s no “I” in “Mustache.” But there is one in “Lip Rug.” And there are five in “I like it. It suits you.”
Q. Freaking Fu Manchu! People want to give me money, what do I do with it ?
A. Take it, but make sure it gets to the kids. The easiest way (easiest on you) for people to donate, is to make sure you have a Grower page setup and send people directly to DonorsChoose.org by sharing the permalink for your page. So long as they don’t mind making an online credit card donation and sharing a small bit of information with DonorsChoose (for thank you letters), this method will help you track your progress. Your donors can also make a check donation through following the instructions on DonorsChoose.org. Have a donor that doesn’t like the internet? They can give you a check made payable to DonorsChoose.org with “Mustaches for Kids” written in the Memo portion. You can then go to your own Grower page, pick which project to apply the donation to, and follow the instructions on sending a check donation. Or visit our Chicago - General Donations page if you don’t have your own page. You can also hand off checks to a Mustache Representative at an event or email us at m4kchicago {at} gmail {dot} com for instructions. Please don’t hold onto checks for too long, they expire.
Q. Holy Handlebar! People want to give me cold hard cash, what do I do?
A. Take it, but make sure it gets to the Kids. You are welcome to collect cash throughout the Growing Season (just let those donors know only check donations are tax deductible). Keep track of how much cash you raise, periodically or at the end of the season make sure you make a credit card or check donation to DonorsChoose.org for this amount through one of the methods outlined above!
Q. Where does all this money go?
A. All proceeds from the Mustaches for Kids Mustache Growing Contest and Fundraisers go to one or more of the projects on DonorsChoose.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which provides funding for teacher-submitted projects to improve at-need public schools.
Q: Growing season’s already underway, how can I help?
A: There are lots of ways to contribute. You can donate. Or, stop by an event to share a pint with the Growers. Even sending your mates to our website would be a great.
Q. How do I respond to friends, colleagues, neighbors, and loved ones if they mock the Mustache and object to my participation?
A. Do what we do. Fix them with a steely gaze and tell them the truth: “It’s for the kids.” Then ask them to make a donation.
Q: I went to see Da Vinci Code…in the theatre. Do you still want my help?
A: Yes, we do. Acts of cinematic distaste do not preclude anyone’s contribution.
Q. Why Mustaches? Why the goofy name?
A. This is not your typical fundraising organisation. We believe in doing good and having a good time doing it. And we like to drink beer.
Q. Are you sure this isn’t a joke?
A. Positive.
Q. Swear?
A. We swear to all that we hold holy that this is not a joke; we need your support. The kids need us!
Q. How do I contact Mustaches for Kids Chicago?
A. As you’ve already discovered, you can find updates at our web site - www.m4kchicago.org. You can email us directly at m4kchicago{ at} gmail {dot} com. Better yet, why not meet us in person at one of our Mustaches for Kids events? Rumour has it, we’re friendly, charming, intelligent, genuine, worldly, handsome, accomplished…and miraculously modest.
