This winter in Chicago, principled blokes - as official Mustaches for Kids Growers - will adorn the city with a collective, unapologetically mustachioed face. Whilst an unruly subset of the city’s population is certain to accuse the outfit of compromising themselves…their faces, their relationships, their careers…Growers, dignity intact, will celebrate the Mustache - for the benefit of Chicago schools!

In 2009, Chicago’s Mustaches for Kids community will collect pledges and secure donations as part of a Mustaches for Kids Nationwide Challenge through DonorsChoose.org.

Conceptually, Mustaches for Kids functions much like that read-a-thon you did in grade school. Except, there’s no reading requirement…and you’re growing a mustache. OK - not exactly the same, but you get the idea.

Growers will collect pledges from friends, neighbors, colleagues, distant-relatives, acquaintances, passers-by, local merchants, Hobbitses, and bus drivers. As Mustache Sponsors, this generous lot will not only play a pivotal role each Grower’s endurance, but also share a spot in the benevolent shade of a Mustache well grown.

PLEASE NOTE: The Official Mustaches for Kids Mustache is limited to stately corner-to-corner growth. You know, the timeless Magnum P.I. style - preferred by motorcycle cops, adopted by uncles, and endorsed by little league coaches the world over. Beards, goatees, fu-manchus, soul patches, stingers, and other redeeming facial hair are strictly prohibited. See Rules for more detail.

Growing season begins on Monday November 16th, but new Growers are welcome to join at any time. In the wake of the Shaving Day Kick-Off Celebration, the Mustaches for Kids community will observe four brilliant weeks of sweet, sweet for-the-children Mustache cultivation. Growers are encouraged to grow at their own paces.

The Mustaches for Kids community (Growers and Sponsors) are urged to swarm Weekly Mustache Checkpoints. A good time for all, these gatherings offer non-growing participants a behind-the-scenes look at simple mustachioed idealism - and, perhaps, the occasional hug. Meanwhile, weekly meetings provide Growers with a comfortable platform for the exchange of moral support and assorted you-won’t-believe-what-my-mustache-saw-today hilarity.

The close of growing season is marked by ‘Stache Bash 2009. At this point, the Mustaches for Kids community will, with much fanfare, select Chicago’s “Sweetest ‘Stache” – thus, recognizing the Abe Froman of Mustache.

About Mustaches for Kids - Chicago

In its inaugural 2006 campaign, Chicago’s Mustaches for Kids community raised over $13,000 for Off the Street Club. In 2007 Chicago Growers kicked the fun-raising and fund-raising up a notch and raised nearly $25,000 for Off the Street Club; In 2008, Chicago Growers battled it out against other hirsute cities in a National Mustache Fundraising Challenge through DonorsChoose.org; all while celebrating the contributions of both Growers and Sponsors. But, especially Growers - a varied batch of principled men, slighting the burden of taking themselves too seriously, and surrendering to any combination of three profoundly human impulses:
- Growing Mustaches
- Soliciting Donations
- Concerning Themselves with the Welfare of Chicago Youth

About Mustaches for Kids

Mustaches for Kids is an international volunteer-run, Mustache-growing Children’s Charity. In eight fulfilling years, the Mustaches for Kids proposition has enjoyed steady expansion throughout the US and Canada - continental progress not unlike the measured, deliberate growth of a Mustache. In that time, Mustaches for Kids, owing to the efforts of an impressive community of Growers, has raised over hundreds of thousands of dollars for various children’s charities.

About DonorsChoose.org

DonorsChoose.org was born in the teachers’ lunchroom of a Bronx public high school where Charles Best, our founder, taught social studies for five years. He and his fellow teachers were spending lots of their own money on basic supplies but still seeing their students go without the books, art supplies, field trips, and other resources needed for a rigorous education.

So they started a nonprofit website where any public school teacher can post a resource request for their students, and donors from all walks of life can choose the projects they want to support, www.DonorsChoose.org. You can check out our search page and you can see that there are lots of live requests from New York to Los Angeles, to everywhere in between, like Mississippi. There are also lots of requests that that match a personal interest, like yoga, baseball, autism, or Dr. Seuss.
